Three simple terms used to describe a board.

 

**End grain:** Extremity of transversal cut of a squared wood plank.

 

**Side grain:** Tangential cut parallel to growth rings. In other words, the thinnest side of a squared plank.

 

**Flat grain:** Top of squared wood plank, cut at right angle to the growth rings.
